Over 40 years ago, during the height of the punk wave sweeping across Great Britain, Jake Burns, Henry Cluney, Brian Faloon and Ali McMordie formed Stiff Little Fingers (SLF) as a personal and political outlet for their troubles. Like many bands who got their start in the 1970’s, and the very few who are around these days, SLF went through their highs and lows. They went through line-up changes and break ups only to reunite again for a couple reunion shows over the years – as their fans continuously implored for more shows and new music from their favorite band.

Fast forward to 2017, Stiff Little Fingers are currently on tour, with two members of the original line-up, celebrating 40 years as an iconic punk band that helped pave the way for many artists of today who cite them as a great influence. Last Thursday, September 21, Stiff Little Fingers brought their extensive catalogue of hits to Metro Chicago. Accompanied by Death by Unga Bunga, an incredibly high-energy Norwegian garage-rock band, they kicked off the night’s show with their repertoire of good power-pop songs and catchy choruses. Death by Unga Bunga brought the quips, the riffs and spirit to the show setting the crowd up for Stiff Little Fingers.

Upon the beginning of their performance, Stiff Little Fingers proved age is but a number, that you never grow out of your punk ways, and that the band still has what it takes to play their legendary hits – high kicks and all. With a setlist spanning two pages and four decades, Stiff Little Fingers began their set with “Wasted Life,” the song that helped them breakout as one of Ireland’s finest punk acts, and made their way across their most well-renowned songs to end on “Alternative Ulster” during the encore. The band primarily played songs from their 1979 debut album up till their 1990’s catalogue, and throughout shared the band’s long history, reminiscing about the inspiration behind particular songs, and shared many “thank yous” to their dedicated fanbase. Showing no signs of slowing down any time soon, who knows what we can expect from the band in the next couple of years. See you for their 50th anniversary tour, perhaps?

Stiff Little Fingers are set to wrap up their U.S. tour this upcoming October and will travel across Europe to continue on their anniversary run.
