Remembering Blink-182’s ‘Cheshire Cat’ on it’s 22nd birthday

By February 18, 2017No Comments

On February 17th 1995, Blink-182 debuted their first official album, ”Cheshire Cat“, that kickstarted a legacy that ignited pop-punk music. After producing three demos that gained serious attention in the San Diego area, the band officially got their start and ran with the success.

On the 22nd birthday of their debut album, it’s only fitting to give appreciation for a unique list of songs.

Cheshire Cat was one of the first of it’s kind. Most of the punk rock audience was used to The Descendants, All, NOFX, etc. No one really thought of a trio of suburban kids could rock out and write catchy and intricate songs. However, when 1995 rolled around, the world heard some lyrics that were relatable, yet so obscene.

Blink-182 mostly wrote songs about falling in love with a girl who they were so desperate for, feeling alone because of a breakup/lack of girls in their life, and some goofy nonsensical jokes. They did a great job of appealing to a teenage audience while adding some humor that was wildly entertaining. I mean, who doesn’t enjoy these lyrics?

“My love life was getting so bland
There are only so many ways I can make love with my hand
Sometimes it makes me want to laugh
Sometimes I want to take my toaster in the bath”

Not to mention, the guitar riffs were loud, fast, and catchy as all hell. The riffs in “Carousel”, “M+M’s”, and “Cacophony” were some of the best to be on a debut album from a local band. In fact, both “Carousel” and “M+M’s” made it onto the band’s greatest hits album in 2005.

So, to give appreciation to the band that redefined punk rock music, why not listen to their first album?
