10 songs to listen to when you’re down

By May 20, 2019No Comments

May is known as being Mental Health Awareness month. The purpose of this month is to educate the public of mental health illnesses and in addition to helping come to an understanding of the realities of those living with mental health illnesses, such as depression, schizophrenia, and bipolar disorder. In addition, to the previously mentioned purposes, another goal is to help draw attention to suicide; which is often brought on by many other mental illnesses. In addition to the above-listed goals, there is a big importance in trying to reduce the stigmas that are surrounding these illnesses in society today.

But why is it important to write or even talk about mental health illnesses? Mental Health illnesses, regardless of what we may think, affect us all in one way or another. We may see it in our own lives, our dear family or friends lives, or may even know someone who lost their battle with these illnesses.

Listed below are my top 10 songs I find myself listening to when I am going through rough times, along with the lyrics that stand out the most.

10. “My Name” – From Ashes to New

“I woke up one day
With the world outside telling me, I should walk away
But I can’t, I won’t break
That’s how I know it; everything will be okay.”

9. “The Stigma [Boys Don’t Cry]” – As it Is

“Stay strong
Hold on
You’ve got to keep it together now.”

8. “Hold On”- Good Charlotte

“Hold on if you feel like letting go
Hold on; it gets better than you know
Don’t stop looking; you’re one step closer
Don’t stop searching; it’s not over.”

7. “Head Above Water” – Avril Lavigne

“my life is what I’m fighting for
Can’t part the sea, can’t reach the shore
And my voice becomes the driving force
I won’t let this pull me overboard.”

6. “Easy Enough” – State Champs

“but I’m willing to prove

you’ve got more fight left in you.”

5. “Dare You To Move” – Switchfoot

“I dare you to lift yourself up off the floor
Like today never happened
Today never happened before”

4. “Hard Times” – Paramore

“Gonna make you wonder why you even try
(Hard times) gonna take you down and laugh when you cry
(These lives) and I still don’t know how I even survive
(Hard times)
(Hard times)
And I gotta get to rock bottom”

3. “My Blood”- Twenty One Pilots

“When everyone you thought you knew
Deserts your fight, I’ll go with you
You’re facin’ down a dark hall
I’ll grab my light and go with you”

2. “Adam’s Song”- blink-182

“Tomorrow holds such better days”

1. “Keeper” – With Confidence

“I can’t keep going on alone
I just need someone for conversation
(I need you)”

It’s important to remember that we are all human. First of all, we do not always need to be happy and second, we are allowed to show sadness. Regardless of society’s belief of sadness, it’s not a sign of “weakness” to talk about being sad. In other words, It’s okay to not be okay. It’s okay to have ups and downs with good and bad days. That’s the beauty of life, it helps shape us to the people are and who we are to become.
