Alkaline Trio drummer Derek Grant departs after 22 years

By June 9, 2023No Comments

Derek Grant, drummer of the punk band Alkaline Trio, has decided to leave the group after 22 years, as announced on June 8. Grant has played in most of Alkaline Trio’s studio albums, including Good Mourning and Agony and Irony.

Prior to joining Alkaline Trio in 2001, he performed with various groups such as The Suicide Machines, Gyga, and Thoughts of Ionesco. Grant has also created individual music under his own name. Despite the difficulty of the decision, he has concluded that traveling with the band as a touring musician has become increasingly demanding and ultimately would have an adverse impact on his mental health.

In a statement, he expressed gratitude to the numerous Alkaline Trio fans he has met through the years, as well as his manager, and most notably, his bandmates, Dan and Matt, who he has described as his closest friends. The remaining members of Alkaline Trio conveyed their appreciation of Grant’s contributions, both musically and personally, and wished him well in his future endeavors.
