How did you come up with the band name Another Year Unknown?
The name Another Year Unknown came from one day of our Guitarist sitting on his couch trying to think of names that meant something to him. The thought popped into Ashton’s head surrounding how many amazing, creative people can go through life unnoticed and remain essentially “unknown.” Another year could go by being unknown, no matter how hard you work or how much you put into your passions. The band name derived from that thought – and thus Another Year Unknown was created.
“Love” is a banger and the video is stunning. Can we expect more digital art from you guys in the future?
Whoah, super amped you think it’s a banger. Our guitarist actually used to edit videos for a living, so he got his creative hands on the music videos for “Love” and for “A-TT-I-C.” We could definitely pump some more digital art out since we’re all staying inside during COVID. This video was the result of our band adapting to our current situation since we couldn’t actually get out and film a music video.
You guys are focused on sending deeper messages in your music. What are some of the topics you guys feel musicians can and should speak out on?
Mental health is a massive topic we feel artists should speak out on. Especially with COVID, everyone’s stuck inside, some people are losing their jobs, etc. We are facing a worst-case scenario for people that already struggle with mental health. Just know if you are one of those people – YOU ARE NOT ALONE. Speak out to friends, family, or even message us. We are here and our music is here for you.
The other concept AYU was founded on was not giving up on your dreams. It’s so easy to lose track of what you truly want and before you know it – you’re stuck in a daily routine consistently wondering “what if.” If you truly want something, put it first and at least accomplish one small goal to get closer to your dream, each and every day. Life is way too short to not pursue what you’re truly passionate about, and you don’t want to regret not giving it your all later down the line in life.
You have a lot of iconic punk rock influence in your music. What bands or artists do you look up to for inspiration?
We get told that we sound similar to Blink 182 a lot. I’d say they definitely influence our music along with Sum 41, The Offspring and Angels and Airwaves.
What music have you been listening to lately?
Our music playlist is constantly changing, but we’ve been listening to the new Angels and Airwaves a bit. Also Point North, Tonight Alive (who are absolutely amazing live), Boston Manor, Box Car Racer, The Story So Far, and MGK (his new punk stuff is pretty cool).
How have you been keeping sane during quarantine and COVID-19?
We’ve been all doing different things and making time to connect on music when able.
Ashton, our guitarist, has been spending a lot of time inside practicing guitar, writing music, playing video games, and founded a coffee company. He’s actually been busier in quarantine than he was in “normal” times, whatever those are anymore. The band still meets up and practices, records videos for content, and tries to create new music to record once we are able to.
Chris, our bassist, has been working out a lot, training his pup, and training to do a hike on the Appalachian trail next year with his wife.
Andrew, our drummer has been going on drives to get outside, playing drums a lot, and doing some carpentry work to keep afloat.
Do you have anything else to say to your fans or All Punked Up readers?
We just really want to thank you for your time. We just released two new singles over the last two months that we’ve poured our heart into so we’d love it if you go check them out. We are a primarily local band right now with a BIG dream to get out and share our music with everyone. We hope you’re all staying safe and hopefully see you at a show sometime again soon!
