Artemis are an all-girl, alt-rock/post-punk, four-piece hailing from Southampton, UK. The band started out playing and creating music in the Southampton/London area but have quickly built up a fan base from far and wide. Following the release of their single, “New Waves”, we caught up with the band to find out what they’re all about.

Hey Artemis, welcome to your first All Punked Up interview! Can you describe your band in three words or a phrase?
Heyyyyyyy, thanks for having us!! We’re often described as ‘ballsy bubblegum punk rockers’, but three words we’d use are energetic, powerful and loud! We find that we lean and fall into different sub-genres quite a lot so we let people interpret what scene they associate us with.
How did Artemis first come together and what was the decision behind the name?
We all met at Solent Uni in Southampton and we all wanted to be in a girl band anyways, it was just coincidence we found the right people at the right time. We all watched each other play live at The Joiners venue back in February 2019. Fenella approached Yianna about starting a band, then eventually asked me (Frankie) and Hannah to join. We met up for a couple pints to get to know each other, and figure out what kind of sound and style we wanted to create, as well as what artists we would take influence from.
We were originally going to be called The Aphroditees but it didn’t feel like us and it seemed too corny, but we found Artemis and stuck with her ever since. She’s the goddess of wilderness, animals and hunting – so she’s pretty badass.
You recently dropped a new single, “New Waves”, how are you guys feeling about it?
Yessss, we’re so pumped with the response it’s received since we released it!! The press and media response has gone really well; it’s reached plenty of radio stations and it’s been featured on numerous playlists. We’re forever grateful for the love and support people have shown us for this and we can’t wait to record some new fresh material soon.
What’s the story behind the track and what are your favourite lyrics from it?
New Waves is about us as a generation standing up against the mistakes that authoritative roles and systems make, and to stop being blamed for the problems that have manifested into the world. Our favourite lyrics from the track are the; “I found a way to break the silence, from the words, from the darkness”, talking about protesting how our “mouths are sealed”, and “free the youth from your sins”.
What would be your dream tour line up?
Probably WAAX and Placebo for Fenella, Frank’s would be Poppy and VUKOVI,
For Hannah it would be Wolf Alice and PUP,
And for Yianna it would be Paramore and Bring Me The Horizon.
What songs never fail to lift your spirits?
For Frankie it’s “Fingerprints” by Hiatus Kiayote,
For Fenella it’s “9 to 5” by Dolly Parton,
For Hannah it’s “This Will Be” by Natalie Cole,
For Yianna it’s “good 4 u” by Olivia Rodrigo.
Any plans for shows when restrictions lift?
Yeah so we’re playing Vesterbro Rock Fest in Denmark this September which we’re super stoked for!!! Fingers crossed it doesn’t get postponed again. We’re still trying to get back most of the gigs and festivals we had to cancel from 2020, and re-arranging house and garden parties when things are a bit safer.
Do you have anything else to say to our readers?
Again huge thanks to All Punked Up for featuring us:) Thank you to everyone who’s been streaming our new single, and supporting us throughout this strange year – we’re always grateful and we can’t wait to bring ya some more fresh material!!
