Census release stirring new single “Sunbeam”

By August 17, 2020No Comments

Progressive rock band CENSUS have released their new single “Sunbeam,” available on all digital platforms NOW. Released alongside an incredibly personal music video, “Sunbeam” brings the issue of domestic abuse to light. Falling outside the scope of the typical metal band, CENSUS presents a powerful pop vocal style that meshes perfectly with their heavy rock instrumentation. CENSUS has opened up for a wide range of national touring acts, including Beartooth, Like Moths to Flames, and Kublai Khan, among others. Pairing modern metalcore and 80’s-esque guitar riffs with emotionally driven lyrics, CENSUS aim to continually evolve their platform with “Sunbeam”. Heart wrenching and unsettling at points, “Sunbeam” brings listeners on an emotionally sonic and visual ride. About the single, the band states:

“Sunbeam” is about a girl who deals with sexual abuse and battles depression and mental manipulation from her current partner. Ben wrote this song for a friend of his (who would like to be anonymous) after hearing about how she went through some of the same experiences. We decided to make sexual abuse the main topic of the music video because, especially in 2020, it is becoming increasingly more clear how common sexual assault is, and we wanted to use this song and story to bring awareness to that. It’s a hard thing for people to talk about, and honestly, it’s a hard music video to watch at parts, but it’s a real issue and it’s important to acknowledge it, rather than pretend it doesn’t exist.”

Census is a modern progressive rock band that originated in Jessieville, Arkansas. Current members include Ben Carey (vocals), Bo Sawyer (guitar), Jathan Neider (bass), and Josh Coleman (drums). The band’s heavy metalcore roots can be observed in their releases “Placebo” (January 2018), “Enigma” (2016) and a seven-track EP titled Peaceseeker (2016). The addition of the track “I Can Feel Eternity” (December 2018), featuring Ben Carey for the first time as lead vocals, marked the band’s noticeable shift in genre. In the spring of 2017, the band was chosen to play So What?! Music Fest through a contest held by festival founder Mike Ziemer. Census is constantly working to evolve and mature their sound by writing music with purpose and providing others with a platform to be involved.
