Derek Sanders “My Rock and Roll Heart”- Review

By February 13, 2020No Comments

Stepping away from the pop punk spotlight that is Mayday Parade, Derek Sanders has put together a 5-track love story. Having a close connection to Valentine’s day, Derek Sanders appropriately has released his first solo EP on Valentine’s Day. From bands like Jimmy Eat World and Saves the Day, My Rock and Roll Heart is a small collection of stripped covers that have a significant meaning to him.

The first track on this EP is “But Lauren”. Originally this song was performed by the band Goodbye Love, and is recorded here as a gift to Sanders’ wife. Every one of these songs have a raw quality about them, making it possible to really feel the emotion that was put into recording them. This album has the perfect blend of harmonies that really suck you into the song. “A Praise Chorus” is one song that is very harmony driven, and features the vocals of Derek Lancaster. The sound is simple, but very effective. It seems that the whole EP consists of a piano, an acoustic guitar and his voice.

You can close your eyes and feel loved listening to these songs, that’s the powerful effect music can have on you. It’s only 5 short songs, and all of them are from different bands across the genre, but the way they’ve been stripped back makes them seem as if their intent was to be together.
