First off, I wanted to congratulate you on the release of your new EP “Chapters of an Open Heart.” How are you feeling post release??
Trevor: Honestly just feeling so grateful for all the kind words we are getting about the EP. We are feeling so thankful for all of the friends that helped us make the EP what it is today! It’s just a great feeling to finally have this new music out in the world.
If you had to choose your favorite song or lyric from “Chapters of an Open Heart,” and why?
Trevor: I think my favorite lyric of the EP would have to be from our song “Brave.” A bit of a long one but it goes:
“I was a piece, did not know how to play
I rolled the dice thought I understood the game
You’ve been ahead every space along the way”
When I was writing that with our producer Ace I was thinking about using a board game analogy as a clever way to explain how someone could be ahead of your every move and manipulate you to be just a piece in their own game. Just like a board game there are winners and losers.
What is your most favorite lyric that you have written and why?
Trevor: We have a song off our last EP called “This Isn’t a Goodbye” and there are lyrics from that song that I wrote way before the band was a thing that go:
“Cause there’s still a part of me that has faith you’ll come around one day”
and
“This Isn’t a goodbye, more a see you later”
Those lyrics still stick out to me because they are deeply meaningful to me and the person I wrote that song about but also everybody has that one family member or friend in their life that makes their life more difficult to keep around, but there’s a part of you that thinks that one day that person might change for the better.
Sometimes these family members or friends can feel like they are too much but because you have this deep bond with them you stick with them and hope that maybe your friendship can have a positive impact one day. You can’t just kick them out of your life and say goodbye, sometimes you just have to take some space apart and say see you later instead.
For those who may not have heard of your band, Goldview, can you describe it for us?
Nathan: In terms of the instrumentals, I guess you can say we are an Alternative band with influence from Pop. Our vocals/lyrics and song structure are influenced from Pop. Our new song “Brave” is pretty much a Pop song. We love synthesizers and guitars. We try blending elements of Pop but still maintain a rock energy in our music.
How did the band get its name?
Nathan: It’s inspired by the city of Mountain View in the Bay Area. We are from San Jose, CA. California is the Golden State so Gold is fitting.
Can you tell me a little bit about each member of the band and their role within the group?
Nathan: Nathan, myself, is the bassist. Newton is the guitarist. Trevor is the vocalist. Nathan and Newton started the band.
Newton and Nathan love artists such as Taylor Swift, Coldplay, CHVRCHES, Gareth Emery, and blink-182. Nathan and Newton are twins. We love skateboarding and basketball. Trevor has been singing since he was a little kid. About 4-5 years old. Trevor is a very big fan of video games. Trevor loves metal music too.
What do you feel sets your band apart from other bands in your genre?
Nathan: A lot of bands hop on trends. They make music that is hype or caters to a lot of people. Pop music to us is so broad. The type that we like is synthpop. However, we are huge fans of new wave, alternative, and anything innovative.
When we are writing music in the studio and getting the songs produced, we focus on making the best songs we could and try learning from multiple genres. We do not set out to make what is currently a trend. We make the music we like, but incorporate new and creative methods to make the music innovative.
Can you share some of your favorite memories as a band?
Nathan: Playing shows and touring is fun. We did a little tour in the Southwest in 2019, hitting Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas. It was an adventure. The studio is always enjoyable as well. We learn a lot in the studio, but it is also fun. We went to New Jersey in 2018 and 2020 to record.
I recall in 2020, Newton used my toothbrush by accident and I cried laughing. Our drummer at the time, Scotty, witnessed me not breathing due to laughter. Then, Newton throws both of our toothbrushes away. We asked why he threw away his own if it would not comprise his own germs. It was just funny.
What is something that you have accomplished so far in your career that you are most proud of?
Newton: Definitely working with producers that we admire. We have worked with Sam Pura, Nik Bruzzese, and Ace Enders. Learning from all of them has been great. They are so talented. We also got to play live with No Pressure. It’s always rad playing with bands or members of bands that inspired you.
If you could set up your tour with any band or singer, who would it be and why?
Nathan: With bands and artists within our popularity level, playing with Jacob Price, A Better Way, and Charlie Pineda would be fun. They are friends of ours. We love their music. We feel that our fans would enjoy them too.
In terms of big dreams and wishes, it would be so awesome if we played with Taylor Swift, Angels & Airwaves,or blink-182. We could dream.
Who would be band or singer you would love to write music with?
Nathan: Tom DeLonge or Taylor Swift.
If we were to get in the car with you right now, what song would be listening to?
Nathan: One moment, I’ll listen to Pop, the next Electronic and Hardcore. Right now, I have been listening to a lot of ILLENIUM and Gareth Emery. “Lost” by ILLENIUM, “Missing You” by Gareth Emery. Also “Intro”, “The Joke”, and “No Direction by Minus.
Just for kicks and giggles: if you could be any kitchen utensil what would you be?
Nathan: Chopsticks.
What can fans expect from you this upcoming year?
Newton: We are currently rehearsing for an upcoming live session. We hope to play these new songs from the “Chapters of an Open Heart” EP soon. We also have a show with Every Avenue planned.
Is there anything else you would like your fans to know?
Nathan: We hope that everyone likes the new EP “Chapters of an Open Heart”. It’s available on all digital platforms. Music videos on YouTube. You could buy merch on our BandCamp. We have awesome hoodies. It’s inspired by the Golden State Warriors. Represent the Bay!
Also, shout out to Sam Pura. We love him. One of the best producers ever and the best we know. Check out all his work. Amazing friend, musician, and mentor. The Panda Studios rocks.
