Half Hearted’s debut self-titled record will lead the emo revival—album review

By March 19, 2020No Comments

Connecticut-based rockers Half Hearted will release their self-titled debut album tomorrow on all streaming platforms. So far, the band has released three singles from the record: “Vicious Cycle,” “One Drink,” and “Liar.” Half Hearted features twelve tracks that span across many rock subgenres, ensuring sounds that all kinds of rock fans can enjoy and appreciate.

The band notes that “We produced the album ourselves, with no outside help whatsoever, and that resulted in 12 very personal tracks that we are unbelievably proud of.” Half Hearted is all about heartbreak and feelings of inadequacy. This record is “for the people who keep coming up short, but never quit.”

All Punked Up received a sneak peek of the band’s first album together. Check out our review, as well as their latest music video, below!

Our Thoughts on Half Hearted’s Debut Album

In short, Half Hearted is the most solid debut album from any band, ever.

The album opens with a song that talks about not being enough for someone else. It features a soft beginning with a fun guitar riff in the chorus. The lyrics are matched very well with the music to create an immersive experience of dealing with feeling unwanted or unworthy for someone else. It moves into a track that switches the message from personal insecurity to questioning and blaming the partner for the tragic breakup. We see and feel a sort of evolution of ideas and emotions throughout the album as they move through a tough breakup. Without a doubt, the band pulled from their personal experiences to make such a rich, authentic set of songs.

Musically, the album is pretty diverse. Throughout each and every song, aspects of punk rock, pop-rock, alternative, and even post-hardcore can be heard. Half Hearted uses these different influences to create a beautiful sound unique to their band. Fans can dance, head-bang, and cry throughout the album, and often even within the same song. It is clear that Half Hearted has incredible talent and unmatched skill, especially as a young band in the scene. The band has mastered the balance of heavy and light styles to appease fans across the rock spectrum.

Personally, I cannot even pick a favorite track. There are songs to jam to in the car with the windows down, songs to jam to with my friends, songs to cry to alone, and songs to head-bang to with a crowd. My favorite song off this album will always be determined by my mood and environment.

Kudos to Half Hearted, as they will undoubtedly lead the emo revival movement!
