Post Hardcore has always been a genre of music to make people feel something. La Dispute allowed me be able to experience this live in Chicago with openers Slow Mass and Gouge Away.
Slow Mass started the show, being natives of Chicago playing a hometown show. With their experimental sound, you could tell they love being on stage. Their vibe was so creative and fun that every audience member visible to me had a smile on their face.
Gouge Away came after, putting on nothing shy of an amazing performance. With their punk rock sound and a side of influence of post-hardcore, Gouge Away was charismatic and energetic, interacting so well with the stage and their audience.
The anticipated performance of La Dispute followed, and it was everything I expected. Overhearing audience members excitement of their favorite band touring after doing so only rarely, I heard murmurs of this band pulling people through emotional times, painful times, and even the best of times. Their set matched this talk, spewing spoken word with a post-hardcore twist to the next level. I have never seen a band connect with their audience quite the way La Dispute did. I witnessed tears, smiles, laughs, and dancing throughout the entire set. The performance was almost indescribable. Saying this, I urge you all to catch this band on tour if you have the chance.
