London four-piece, Lapyear debut EP, Smile on Venn Records (Marmozets, Moose Blood, Milk Teeth). A band that merges a wide range of influences, they have created a unique sound that is well-showcased in their new EP. Having previously released singles from the EP, “Under My Tongue” and “Negative (I Wish I Was)” – the band gave a taster of what was to come in Smile.
This EP is the perfect serving of nostalgic 90s grunge and brit pop. There’s no denying too, that Lapyear are exceptionally good at pairing more subdued lyrics with catchy riffs and breezy guitar, like in “Negative (I Wish I was)”, “What can I do, wish I was negative like you, it’s in everything you do.”
The first track on the EP, “See Inside”, has the same formula. Emotive lyrics that you can’t get out your head –“Won’t you kick me while I lose everything, drag me under you”, is chanted over atmospheric guitar. There’s definitely an ethereal element to this track, which is reflected through the rest of the EP too.
The Lapyear debut offers up raw and honest lyrics that will resonate with the listener, something the band said they hoped for, in a previous interview with All Punked Up.
When we caught up with the band to talk about the track, “Under My Tongue”, they said, “The song is about essentially not being comfortable in your own skin but putting on this alter ego to convince yourself and your peers that you are.”
They went on to say that, “I’m dying just to see you smile”, is a standout lyric – a personal message about looking at the positives in life. A relatable message for people and even more so, considering the current state of the world right now.
The sound of the EP also sees DIY-emo/punk influences – if you’re a fan of Oso Oso, Balance & Composure or Macseal, Lapyear is a band to add to your lockdown playlist!
