Lapyear talk new single-exclusive interview

By March 21, 2020No Comments

This week we caught up with Hertfordshire (UK) band, Lapyear to talk about their new single, ‘Under My Tongue’.  Here’s what they had to say…

You guys have just put out a new single, ‘Under My Tongue’ – how are you feeling?

We’re feeling great! We’ve been sitting on this batch of songs for over a year, so it’s nice to finally be able to show everyone what we’ve been working on. We’re confident that we’ve created something that will hopefully connect with people and this is only just the start.

What’s the inspiration behind the song?

The song is about essentially not being comfortable in your own skin but putting on this alter ego to convince yourself and your peers that you are.

Is there a stand out lyric from it that really resonates with you?

It’s very hard to pick out a standout lyric for me, as 95% of the songs are written from a very personal perspective. However, the line, “I’m dying just to see your smile”, stands out for me, as that line was written when I wasn’t particularly in the best place.  I spent a lot of time picking apart my personal flaws. So that line is almost encouraging myself to focus on the positives in life, whilst acknowledging the fact that nobody is as perfect as you think they are.

Do you guys have a specific ritual you follow when you’re writing music?

Normally it’s me or Scott who will work on an idea and we usually try out a few variations of it. This normally stems into a home demo, then we’ll show it to our drummer Mat, he’s got a good ear for arrangement – vital when one of us sends over something that could do with a lot of cutting down.  From there, we evolve it into something we’re all happy with. We recently started working with a new bassist, Lawrence. He’s been bringing a lot of ideas to the table, it’s great to see him getting stuck in. So, this ritual could change completely when we start putting together the next release, we’re not the kind of band to repeat ourselves so it’ll be interesting to see how we work with different methods of writing.

For newcomers, how would you describe your sound?

I’d say predominantly the emo revival of the early 10’s, blended together with the indie/shoegaze of the early 90s, whilst also trying to create something new!

What are your plans for 2020? Any tours on the horizon?

We have a few things planned, present and future. We’re also very keen to work on new material already. We’re quite a restless band and our music tastes are always evolving, we love throwing bands at each other and getting into that head space, so we’ll be working on new music in some way, shape or form – sooner rather than later.

If you could work with any artist/band, who would it be and why?

I’d love to work with Robert Smith, The Cure are my favourite band of all time, so that would be the dream! Would also love to collaborate with Phoebe Bridgers and if Harriet Wheeler of The Sundays ever reappeared on the music scene, I’d love to do something with her, her voice is just incredible.
