Welcome back Mouth Culture! We last caught up in April, just before you released “say it in reverse” – what was the reaction like to your new track?
Honestly it’s been nuts, we’ve never had feedback from a song like we’ve had from “say it in reverse”, the biggest highlight for us was probably being Kerrang’s New Blood Artist of the Week. We’ve been listening and reading/watching Kerrang all of our lives, so to be featured on there was surreal. We also had airplay in Brazil on 89FM, their biggest radio station which was mind-blowing
You’re releasing your next single, “sink” on 10th July – how are you guys feeling?
“sink” is one of our favourite tracks, especially to play live, it’s the one that really gets us pumped and gets the crowd moving. We’re excited to have it out there and hear what people have to say about it.
If you could describe “sink” in one word or phrase, what would it be and why?
Hectic. It’s all over the place, it sounds like someone put the 80’s in a blender, but in a good way?
What’s the story behind your new track and do you have a standout lyric?
It probably doesn’t sound like it in the finished song, but we were fucking with The Cure hard when we wrote “sink” – we fell in love with the whole chorus and verb drenched arpeggiated guitar sound, and it really inspired the instrumental. Then the whole song just kind of fell together as we started adding parts and changing things over time, making it our own. We have a habit of taking inspiration from specific songs or artists when writing, and that inspiration really helps us push the boundaries of the sounds we make.
What bands/artists have been getting you through lockdown?
Mad vibes for Benee, her song “Supalonely” is a killer. BMTH have been up there, their quarantine diaries have been really inspiring to watch. Russ, The WLDLFE, Doja Cat, The 1975, HalfNoise -mainly chilled stuff to keep us sane ahaha. Our local pals in Jools have been getting us through, when lockdown was in full effect we were having weekly pub quizzes with them, those boys are mental but in the absolutely best way <3. Jools are an incredible punk band, if you’ve not heard them before go check them out, “spineless” is a modern classic.
Is there anything else you want to say to your fans or All Punked Up readers?
Stay safe and fuck racism. x
