With their new single, “say it in reverse” releasing tomorrow, we caught up with Mouth Culture to talk about the story behind it, as well as their influences.
Mouth Culture is a 5-piece alt-rock band, hailing from Leicester, UK – creating honest music that explores the phases of love and friendship.
Here’s what they had to say…
You guys are about to put out a new single, “say it in reverse”, how are you feeling?
Excited! We can’t wait for everyone to hear it, we’ve been sat on it for ages. We were supposed to be touring these next few weeks to support it, but Corona gone f**ked it up. (Seriously though, we hope everyone is keeping safe, tour can wait).
What’s the story behind the song and is there a stand out lyric that really resonates?
“say it in reverse” was one of those songs that just kinda fell together, everything flowed so easily, which is one of the reasons we picked it as the first release for this year, it’s such a raw projection of our music it seemed like an obvious choice.
The song itself is about a relationship filled with toxicity, you both want to love each other, but you get so caught up in the petty shit that you never get past fight night. ‘Just a little more drunk than usual, you know this night you’ve been here before.’
For newcomers, how would you describe your sound and who are your musical inspirations?
Our sound is loud, emo inspired alt-rock. Although we subconsciously incorporate loads of different influences into our music. We write about all sorts of stuff, it’s all personal. We like to think that people resonate with that, a lot of it is melancholic, we’ve all still got that little emo inside of us. The 1975, Tame Impala, Harry Styles, Yonaka, Halfnoise, Bring Me The Horizon, Arcane Roots and Paramore to name a few.
We’re intrigued – what’s the inspiration behind the band name?
We almost started a cult. We’re sorry, no further information can be provided at this time. Next question.
How did Mouth Culture first come about?
We’d all been playing in the local scene for a while, Jack with Omaha, Chris and Mason with Part Of The Problem and North Prism, and Jacob with North Prism too. We played shows together and met through the scene, when those bands ultimately disbanded, it seemed right that we all fell together. We still have no idea where Todd came from!
You’ve got some great singles in your discography – is there an album on the cards?
Firstly thank you! We’re glad you enjoyed them. We definitely want to do an album, but it’s difficult, it’s a huge investment to properly market and promote. Until we get some financial backing, we’ll probably be sticking to smaller records.
Any plans to tour this year?
We were supposed to head out on tour with Chapter and Verse and Breather to support the release of “say it in reverse”, tours have now been pushed back to later this year, you can find rescheduled tour dates on Songkick/Spotify.
Finally, can you describe Mouth Culture in 3 words?
