I touched down at JFK Airport after an 8-hour flight back from Paris. The clock was ticking against me and my Uber driver just did not seem to understand how big of a rush I was in. Nevrlands was playing their first show in over a year and I had to be there.
Amityville Music Hall isn’t very large, but it’s the type of venue that plenty of small, but up and coming acts play in the beginning. Being just outside of New York City makes it a prime location for a special sort of pop-punk scene.
When I arrived at the venue, I could immediately feel the energy in the room. There was a community aspect to the crowd. The band says they want people to know that: “We are all more alike than we are different and we hope fans will be able to connect and relate to our music.” That message shines so brightly on stage that it seems to spread to the fans seamlessly and easy.
“The biggest thing that inspires our music and performances is probably our pure love and passion for what we do,” says Nevrlands. And this statement was so obvious seeing them play. It wasn’t just the energy of the fans that caught my attention, but also the performance itself. The band was able to feed off of each other’s energy to bring their performance to the next level. Each moment on the stage seemed to be just as important as the last for them. “We all love to play music more than anything, and any chance we have to do so, we leave everything we have out there on stage.”
And while the room was small, that didn’t matter to Nevrlands, who says: “we’ve scratched and clawed our way for every opportunity so we don’t take anything for granted”. They were sure to make every moment of the show special for their dedicated fans who showed up and had been waiting for so long to see the band back on stage.
While this was their first show in quite some time, their current pace may just be changing. “Fans can expect to start seeing our names a little more often,” they say. “We can’t wait to finally put out this new music we’ve put our entire souls into, and we can’t wait to get out on tour and finally have the opportunity to reach so many more ears.”
As Nevrlands continues to expand, I can’t express how important it is for everyone who can to get out there and support them. The band is the definition of self-made, taking it upon themselves to invest monetarily and energy into their craft. The band has cited endless challenges about working in the industry: including let-downs from professionals and crazy curveballs. But they say: “We’re able to handle anything thrown at us by always sticking together no matter what and weathering the storm. We were brothers first before bandmates and we always will be.”
All this is sure to work out for them, too. Their passion and dedication will take them far. “Once we all found music and ultimately each other we all knew that music was the only thing we wanted,” they said. Their talent radiated throughout their performance and by the end, fans were buzzing with energy and a shared understanding of witnessing the beginning of something big.
