Additionally, Metallica’s gear truck was in a serious car accident, Yellowcard is huge again and has no clue why, The 1975 has pissed off Malaysia and may have to pay millions over a kiss, and TikTok is launching a music competition. Oh, and we give our honest takes on new music released this week.

blink-182, Fall Out Boy, Paramore & more nominated for 2023 MTV VMAs. This year’s Best Rock category boasts an exciting lineup, featuring noteworthy tracks such as “The Teacher” by Foo Fighters from their latest album But Here We Are, and a previously unreleased gem titled “Lost” from Linkin Park’s Meteora era. The list also encompasses Måneskin’s soul-stirring song “The Loneliest,” Metallica’s haunting track “Lux Æterna,” Red Hot Chili Peppers’ captivating “Tippa My Tongue,” and Muse’s enigmatic “You Make Me Feel Like It’s Halloween.” In the Best Alternative category, a fierce competition is anticipated. The much-awaited return of blink-182 introduces their electrifying single “Edging,” while Paramore presents “This Is Why,” and Fall Out Boy unveils “Hold Me Like A Grudge.” These notable contenders will face formidable opposition from artists like Boygenius, Lana Del Rey featuring Jon Batiste, and Thirty Seconds To Mars.

Truck Carrying Metallica Gear to Montreal Involved in Major Accident. A truck carrying equipment for Metallica’s Montreal concerts had a serious accident near Lake George, New York. Despite significant wreckage, there were no major injuries, and the band’s upcoming Montreal shows on August 11th and 13th are set to proceed as planned. Images of the crash were shared by Canadian rock journalist Mitch Lafon on Facebook, showing damage to Metallica’s semi-trailer and another trailer carrying vehicles. Video footage on TikTok by user sammiebaby966 revealed the extent of the damage. A local crew member, Mat Paré, mentioned that some equipment was destroyed but replacements were made for the upcoming shows. Metallica’s “M72 World Tour” started recently with unique sets and various supporting acts for different concerts.

Yellowcard Is Suddenly Huge Again — And They Don’t Know Why. This is a good interview over at Rolling Stone and worth a read. Here’s the gist. Yellowcard experienced an unconventional career trajectory. Their iconic hit, “Ocean Avenue,” from the 2003 album of the same name, became a classic, but subsequent years saw a lack of hits, leading to a breakup in 2017. They reunited for a single performance at Chicago’s Riot Fest in 2022, realizing a resurgence was imminent. Their current Ocean Avenue 20th anniversary tour is enjoying packed venues, attributed to millennial nostalgia and a new wave of pop-punk fans. Lead singer Ryan Key discusses their unexpected success and reflects on their influential album in an interview during the tour’s break.

Malaysian Organizer Seeks $2.7 Million From The 1975 Over Same-Sex Kiss That Shut Down Festival. Malaysian music festival organizer Future Sound Asia is seeking $2.7 million in losses from British band The 1975 due to the band’s lead singer, Matty Healy’s on-stage protest against Malaysia’s anti-gay laws. The protest led to the shutdown of the Good Vibes Festival in Kuala Lumpur. Future Sound Asia sent a letter demanding compensation for breach of contract, citing Healy’s use of profanity, equipment damage, and indecent behavior causing financial losses. Malaysia’s government blacklisted the band and shortened the festival, as homosexuality is punishable by up to 20 years in prison in the country. The organizer will take legal action if the band doesn’t respond by Monday.

TikTok Is Launching a Livestream Music Competition. TikTok is launching a music contest named Gimme the Mic, akin to popular talent shows like The Voice. The competition will take place on TikTok livestreams and involve real-time fan voting. Divided into audition, semifinal, and grand finale phases, aspiring artists can submit 30-second audition videos using #GIMMETHEMIC. The top 30 will progress to the semifinals, where they’ll perform in live-streamed pairs, allowing viewers to vote for their favorites. The US finale on September 10th will feature the top 10 performers, with one earning the chance to compete globally against winners from other countries.

Google in Talks with Universal and Warner to Develop AI-Generated Music Tool. And we talked about this and why we think it spells bad news for artists on this week’s podcast episode. But here’s the gist on these negotiations. Major music industry players Universal Music Group and Warner Music Group are reportedly engaging in discussions with Google regarding the development of a generative AI tool. This tool aims to enable legal and legitimate creation of AI-generated music while respecting artists’ rights. Google’s intention is to provide a way for artists to opt in, allowing their voices or songs to be used for new generative AI content, with copyright holders still receiving payments. The tool is of interest to Universal and Warner, who want to ensure their interests are protected as AI-generated music gains prominence. While talks are in early stages, the music industry sees potential in AI-driven user-driven content and creative possibilities.

Games We Play announces debut album, Life’s Going Great. The album is due out on October 6 via Fueled By Ramen.

Apple Music adds “Discovery Station”. A new feature has been added to Apple Music called the “Discovery Station,” positioned within the “Listen Now” section under Top Picks in the ‌Apple Music‌ app. This personalized radio station, labeled “Made for You,” is accompanied by the personalized radio station that bears your name. For those who haven’t spotted it yet, the feature can also be accessed through this link.

Green Day are teasing ‘Dookie’ 30th anniversary plans. Green Day is gearing up to commemorate the 30th anniversary of their iconic album ‘Dookie,’ released on February 1, 2024. The band has begun teasing anniversary festivities, hinting at celebrations in honor of the milestone. While details are currently limited to the hashtag #Dookie30 and an image of a tape deck, more elaborate plans are expected to be revealed in the lead-up to the anniversary. Here’s the first tease.

The Maine announce tour. The Maine has released their anticipated self-titled album and is preparing for “The Sweet Sixteen Tour” to celebrate 16 years as a band. The tour will kick off in San Diego on November 10th, featuring songs from their career and hits from past albums. Ticket sales start August 11th, with pre-sale options available earlier. The album’s release date, 8.1.23, holds special significance for the band and their fanbase, known as the 8123 Family. The album release was celebrated with a Denver show and a virtual event on 8123 Day.
