Pinkshift is a fem-fronted rock band new to the scene from Baltimore. With writing inspired by 90s grunge and 2000s pop-punk, the band walks the lines between riot grrl, punk rock, and post-hardcore. Melting together different musical and cultural roots through a common love for angsty rock, Pinkshift embraces their diverse backgrounds to create an authentic and dynamic sound.
We had the chance to catch up with the Pinkshift! Following the release of their single, “i’m gonna tell my therapist on you”, the band has burst onto the scene and it’s safe to say, we’re pretty psyched!
For those that are new to Pinkshift, can you describe the band in 3 words?
Erich – We’re pretty good.
Hansel – 90s said hey.
Ashrita – We’re not bad.
What is the meaning behind the band name?
Myron: It comes from redshift, which is a phenomenon where light increases in wavelength as its source moves away from you or vice versa. I was taking physics 2 when we were coming up with names so I said “redshift but make it pink.”
You have been taking social media by storm recently – how are you guys feeling about the response you’ve had?
Ashrita: I’ve been trying to process it honestly – It’s been amazing, and I’m so thankful for the support that we’ve received lately. It’s definitely pushed us to work even harder, and we’re really excited to have an audience with whom to share all of the exciting things we have coming up.
You’ve been noticed by some pretty big names in the scene, who’s name gave you the ultimate “pinch me” moment?
Paul: I think it was Alex Gaskarth – all time low sparked that lil pop punk flame in me as a kid so that did it for me
Hansel: Jeff Rosenstock retweeting the video was super sweet…I fell in love with his music in the last year or so & he was always the sorta patriarchal figure at the top of the NJ/NY punk scene I came from
Ashrita: Honestly all of them, I was in a “pinch me” overall mood over the course of 2-3 weeks after the single dropped.
The APU team have had “i’m gonna tell my therapist on you” on repeat – what’s the story behind your new single?
Ashrita: I really wrote it about just being sick and tired – which I’m learning is a feeling that’s unfortunately extremely relatable! Originally it was kind of a response to having to reiterate how I ‘feel,’ just for it to be processed and sent down the food chain to the next ‘adult.’ There’s a breaking point where you’re just kind of like, “You know what? I’m not fine! Bye!”
We’re loving the chaotic energy in your homemade video, what are your favourite moments from filming?
Erich – Hanging out with my bandmates all day making a fun video 🙂
Ashrita: I think my favorite moments were definitely just having us film and direct each other. Each of us had a camera going during shots so it was fun to hype each other up during takes!
Myron: We got burger king afterwards!!!
The production of the track sounds so fresh and punchy – impressive for such a young band! Did you guys work on it exclusively or did you collaborate with anyone else?
Paul: We recorded most of it ourselves in my bedroom! After the instrumental was laid down, we had our good friend Hansel come through to record/produce Ashrita’s vocals. He contributed to a lot of musical elements that made the song what it is and ultimately mixed/mastered the final version.
Hansel: haha mix machine go brrrr
Is there anything else you want to say to our readers?
Ashrita: We really appreciate everyone who’s picked us up and decided to listen. We have some music coming up if you want to follow us for more 🙂
Pinshift’s next single, “Rainwalk” drops this Friday and you can pre-save it here.
