By August 25, 2023August 28th, 2023No Comments

Check out our exclusive premiere of Television Supervision’s latest music video “Punching Bag!”

Television Supervision is an alternative rock band based in Orlando, FL. The Florida natives have years of experience in the scene as fans & musicians. If you’re a fan of blink-182, Green Day, and Jimmy Eat World, you will absolutely love Television Supervision. Powerful riffs with gritty, emo vocals & lyrics that feels right out of the late 90s/early 2000s. Every song gives intense Warped Tour vibes.

We had the chance to sit down with Brett, the lead singer of TVSV to chat about the band’s progress & goals. Check out our interview below.

How did TVSV come to be? What have the last few years been like for the band since covid hit? What were some of your highs and lows?

The TVSV era of the band took place once we made the move from Tampa to Orlando. We immediately held auditions for another guitar player, had our eyes on one but then Bry came in after that entire process and, I feel bad saying it, but none of the auditions mattered once we met him.

I had known Jason through the scene for a long time, he had been drumming in one of my favorite bands here for a while and while we were friends I never considered it possible for him to be the band’s heartbeat. That band eventually split up, we talked about it like we always had, I didn’t mention him drumming for us I just wanted to be there for him as it wasn’t a clean split. That inevitably turned into him joining and then bringing AJ on as another vocalist. Moving to Orlando was the best decision this band has ever made.

I would consider this to be one of the highs, others have been getting sets for a Lagwagon date, an Emonite slot, playing the House of Blues, really the immediate love we’ve received since being here. Also laying down some truly amazing songs with Andy Karpovck, those have been the highs.

I’d love to go into the lows, we are emo at heart so we’ve sort of always had lows, but I will say take a look at our lyrics as they are all about those experiences. From suicides, losing friends, not having enough money while sorting through a bunch of “industry experts” who want the little you have, its been quite the journey so far but you stay grateful for the wins when you get them.

What are some artists that inspired your most recent music?

We love Kenny Hoopla and Heart Attack Man, the energy they push out is abrasive and melodic, which we have always been about. It’s been cool to see newer artists like them rise up.

Take us through the process of writing & recording “Punching Bag.” What does the song mean to you?

Well this would be one of the lows, which is the beauty of music. You experience something, you sit down and you deal with it by channeling all your thoughts into lyrics, tones, melodies. I’ll never get sick of it.

Punching Bag originated from a night all the band was together, which I’ll always be thankful that we all were together, and I just sort of wrote my thoughts about it down and a month or so later Bry sent us a riff while he was on vacation. I think every song fits a person in an exclusive way so I’ll that it was written for anyone who has had a very close bond with someone deteriorate.

If you could do the song with a featured artist, who would you pick and why?

Honestly I’ve thought Kurt Cobain would slam the prechorus on this song. I have this super high vocal that tries to emulate Kim Deal so it would probably be better to have her do it. Eric from Heart Attack Man or even the Psychedelic Porn Crumpets rocking away would be insane.

Take us through the process of producing this music video. What were some of the highlights and difficulties?

This video was wild. We may or may not have broken into an abandoned golf course, twice, to shoot it. It was shot in the middle of a Florida Summer day and we actually had a show a few hours away that night. Full day. Our prior vids have all been a staple among our fans but we all see this as the first video that fully represents what we are. Chaotic, melodic, tripped out lovers of punk music.

Our director Zodaking (Alonzo Diggs) is heavily involved in the rap scene here, we met him through work and we’ve been boys since. He grinds as hard as we do, walks his own path like we do, just a seamless fit.

We approached this video trying to do something innovative, honestly that part is almost as rewarding as making the song itself. When Zo told us he was going to shoot this video solely with his phone, as crazy as it sounds we knew we had to do it. We felt like Punching Bag had the exact flow it needed to align with the visuals he had in mind. Really excited for the response, in a world where so many artists are out there it’s tough to stand out and we’re stoked with what came out. It’s just the beginning.

Do you have any live shows coming up? Where are some places you’d like to perform within the next few years?

We have several shows here in Orlando, we can never not play, but have definitely been focused on gathering a bunch of songs for the coming months. House of Blues was a great time, really great crowd that loved our fuck the duck moment (we throw a duck into every crowd during our set, fans beat the shit out of it, its great) but we have our sights on Hard Rock over at Universal now. Can’t wait to show them what we got.

If you could pick any 3 artists to tour with, who would you pick and why?

Did I say Heart Attack Man yet? Haha I would be all over that, Kenny Hoopla could headline, and 408 has been a companion to this band for a long time and without question would be the first to hit up. That would be a wild time. High energy, a flow of angst and feel good songs balancing everything out. Inclusive experience from start to finish.

I’d also want to add in bands that we  know from our time here in Orlando- so many great artists it would be hard to choose from and I’m doing a disservice by only naming a couple but 0 Miles Per Hour, Mirror Parts, Flagman, the scene here is unbelievable.

What can fans look forward to in the near future?

Our best music. We have songs that have tapped into our heavy experiences and I’ve never been more proud of what we’ve written. We’ve only shown a select few these songs that Andy Karpovck has produced for us, can’t describe how excited we are based on the response. The band is constantly fighting with each other over which is the favorite, it’s great problem to have, and starting with “Claim to Fame” dropping in the next month or so, we can’t wait for you to hear it.

Do you have anything else to share with your fans or APU readers?

We love APU. They were all over the release of our debut album a couple years ago and it’s been great to see this outlet blossom with every passing year. Julia, you ever even in a video of ours! Any reader here is in the right place for true, authentic punk music.

For anyone that doesn’t know us, each person in this band has suffered immeasurably with our own traumas. Some of you don’t have a foundation to fall on, are isolated, and left to your own devices to figure shit out. We know that pain and that emptiness blurring your days together. The combination of monotony and a lack of purpose is a real mf to deal with on your own.

These songs coming out, look through the lyrics and know that we’re in it with you and are trying to thrive through it too. We want to give you music that uplifts you through commonality and honesty about our situations, as it’s helped free us and we know it can for you too.
