While drummer Brad Wilk recently announced Rage Against the Machine’s supposed disbandment, bassist Tim Commerford remains unsure of the band’s future.
Wilk’s Instagram post earlier this year stated, “I know a lot of people are waiting for us to announce new tour dates for all the cancelled RATM shows.
“So, while there has been some communication that this may be happening in the future… I want to let you know that RATM (Tim, Zack, Tom and I) will not be touring or playing live again.
“I’m sorry for those of you who have been waiting for this to happen. I really wish it was…”
This statement, without confirmation from the other members, has left fans and the music world in wonder.
In a recent Rolling Stone interview, Commerford expressed his lack of knowledge about the band’s official status. “I don’t know. I don’t get involved in that. I’m the bass player. I just wait for someone to tell me what to do. Brad said what he said, but he’s one step above me. He’s in the number three spot. I am the low man on the totem pole. That’s all I can tell you. I’m the bass player. The bass players always are the last people to find out about shit like that.”
Commerford, however, reiterated his commitment to the band if a reunion were to occur. “When the Rage light gets shined up in the clouds, like the Bat-Signal that Batman would see and would know that he had to go do some shit…that’s how I live it. And that feels the best for me.”
The remaining band members, Zack de la Rocha and Tom Morello, have yet to publicly comment on Wilk’s statement.
This news comes amidst a history of hiatuses and reunions for the iconic rock band. They had a brief split in 1994 before reuniting and facing another disbandment in 2000 due to internal conflicts. The band has continued to experience periods of inactivity over the years.
Whether Rage Against the Machine has truly called it quits remains to be seen. Only time, and perhaps official statements from the remaining members, will tell the definitive story.
