Redwood, a five-piece alternative rock band from Hertfordshire, UK, have announced their debut album, Besides A Shallow Sun – set for release on November 6th. The announcement came alongside the release of their latest single, “Ate My Weight”, a showcase of the band’s ability to pivot from angular math-rock to soaring, anthemic indie, while still retaining authenticity and a clear sense of identity.
Drawing influence from a range of genres from emo to post-rock, the band combine delicate melodies and thought-provoking lyrics with intricate, shimmering guitars and powerful choruses with explosive dynamics.
Besides A Shallow Sun sees Redwood blurring the lines of genre and creating an ornate and ethereal indie-pop, shoe-gaze soundscape with both depth and heart. Working with long-time collaborator Hamish Dickinson atPhoenix Sound, Nottingham, Redwood’s twelve-track debut is expertly woven together by tales of nostalgia, existentialism and the romanticisation of time passing by.
Talking about their debut album, guitarist/vocalist, Alex Birchall said,“Lyrically the songs on Beside A Shallow Sun hold many different meanings for me. While writing, I would just sit down and sing what came to mind in that moment. I feel like that’s the most natural process for me when recording vocals. I would often write about things that I hadn’t realised I was feeling until the process began, hiding meaning in metaphors. This record has a very nostalgic throughline where I question myself about the relationships I have formed in my life and how those experiences played out. Being a textbook over-thinker, it’ was therapeutic for me to sing about the things that I had been stressing over and be able to listen back to it in the context of a song.”

It’s safe to say that Redwood will be a band to watch, offering something fresh to the UK music scene.
