We had the opportunity to catch up with the New Jersey four member alternative band, Seconds to Say. Check out our exclusive interview below and make sure to follow Seconds To Say on Social Media.
What was your inspiration for your most recent single “Forever Now”?
“Forever Now” was inspired by a story of growing up with an absent parent who exhibits self-destructive behavior and trying to come to terms with it. The song has this dark tone in the beginning and opens up to bright verses and choruses which we felt really captured the feeling of being content or having accepted the fact that sometimes in life people are the way they are and there’s nothing that can change it.
When you are stuck in a writers block, how do you get out of it?
Writer’s block is awful but we never force anything. We try to only write when we have a specific story we want to tell or are inspired by something specific. We don’t always like what we come up with and sometimes a song goes nowhere but ultimately the songs come when they come.
What are your goals for 2020/2021?
We’re going to continue to write and record. We recently did a music video for our cover of Post Malone’s “Circles”. The video was directed by Brandan Giehl and we had an absolute blast making it. We absolutely want to do more music videos. When we started this band, our initial vision was to make a video for every song but right now logistically that won’t happen. That being said we plan on doing more music videos and we would love to release an EP or full-length. Since our inception, we’ve only released singles so doing a more traditional release would definitely be fun.
What have been some of your favorite experiences in the band?
Brian: For me, I’d have to say it’s using the band as an excuse to hang out with my friends and do something creative.
Deryck: The chance to meet new people all the time. I didn’t even know Brian or Mikey before I joined, and now we always have a great time making music and hanging out.
Mikey: I would have to agree with Brian. Outside of work, and spending time with my wife, the band gives me a creative outlet to do something that I love with people that I love doing it with.
What genres do you listen to? What genre would you consider your music to be?
Brian: People always say this but I honestly listen to and love most genres, except maybe Jazz, but even Jazz I have an appreciation and respect for the strong musicianship. Going through songs on my iPod is a trip. It’s not uncommon for me to listen to blink-182, Metallica, Florida Georgia Line, Vanessa Carlton, NOFX, and Slipknot all in one car ride.
Deryck: I used to be huge into strictly metal growing up, but in the past few years, I have found myself listening to more pop and post-hardcore. Sports and crime podcasts have also grabbed my attention; The Pat McAfee Show and Crime in Sports have been my go-to’s.
Mikey: I honestly love anything with a hook and I can sing along too. During long car rides I always find myself getting nostalgic and listening to bands I grew up on; some local bands, some national acts. Right now, on a 7 day rotation, I have been listening to The Youth Ahead, The Years Gone By, Taking Back Sunday, Patent Pending, The Ataris, The Bouncing Souls, and Hidden in Plain View.
If you could collaborate with anyone, who would it be and why?
Brian: Tom DeLonge. I’ve been a fan of blink-182 for a very long time and they are essentially how I learned to write a song.
Deryck: I think it would be really fun to work with Shane Told from Silverstein.
Mikey: We actually already got to collaborate with someone that I’ve always wanted to work with-Rob Freeman from Hidden in Plain View. Rob was super awesome to work with however I don’t think that we’ve spent nearly enough time with him yet to even scratch the creative surface. I’m really hoping we get back in the studio with Rob soon. I think out of all of the producers and engineers we have had the pleasure of working with, he just gets us and our sound.
With Covid-19 getting in the way of plans for shows, music videos, etc, what are you doing to stay occupied during this time? Are you working on any new music?
We luckily finished up production on our new single “Forever Now” with Rob Freeman literally days before the stay-at-home order. We wanted to do a music video for it but unfortunately that couldn’t happen once this pandemic was fully underway. But we’ve been busy promoting the new single and we do have new songs that are ready to record once life gets back to normal.
What is going to be the first thing you do when you get out of quarantine?
Perhaps we’ll have band practice and see each other again!
With May being mental health awareness month, what is one piece of advice you can give someone going through a hard time?
Life can be tough but it’s important to remember that you are never alone. We are all going through life together and everyone goes through struggles and difficult times. If you feel like you are struggling, never be ashamed or embarrassed of your feelings and reach out to talk to someone.
Is there anything else you would like to say to your Fans or All Punked Up readers?
