We recently had the opportunity to meet up with the UK quartet, Single by Sunday, from Glasgow, Scotland. We discussed single “Severed Ties”, band memories and much more in an exclusive All Punked Up interview.
Single By Sunday consists of band members: Josh Ladds (vocals), Jonny Eakins (guitar/backing vocals), Ben Morland (drums), Joshua Clark (bass).

First off, I wanted to congratulate you on your recent single release “Severed Ties” how are you feeling post release??
Jonny: Truly overwhelmed to say the least, we’ve had fans messaging us telling us how much this track means to them, we’ve also had fans sending photos of their ‘Severed Ties’ tattoos. So, for me it’s truly been a success.
Josh: It is always a massive relief releasing a new single, especially when it has taken a lot of time to sit down and choose the right song that we are going to release next. This can be a challenge as we want our music to be as good as possible for our fans. So relieved is a good word to say how I feel post release.
In “Severed Ties” what would you say your favorite line from the song is?
Jonny: “I can’t seem to put you in first place, I should want to, right?”
This lyric sums up the last half of my last relationship, wanting to have that emotional connection and wanting to put his needs first but knowing our time had expired.
Josh: My favourite lyric is “Call it love, I called it pain. I was drowning in the flames, you’re unstable so unchained, you’re a hateful bastard anyway”.
What is your most favourite lyric that you have written and why?
Jonny: There are really too many to choose from being perfectly honest. Selecting a top 3 right now that are my favourite would be:
- “Stella took me down on Bailey” from Help. Women’s names but also Alcohol references, I thought I was being creative with that.
- “It’s not a joke, when all the words you breathe are smoke to stoke the flame” from Reputation. Just having the 3 words flowing in that sentence, and they just happen to rhyme and make sense, it was too good not to use.
- “You would always cross the line, pretend your fine but you were never mine” from Severed Ties, again this sums up part of the turbulence in my last relationship. Constantly brushing over arguments to keep the peace and not saying how we both really felt.
Josh: My favourite lyrics are from a song we have called ‘Set Me Free’. We’re releasing it later this year. “Where did you go, where are you now. I hope you’re somewhere up in heaven with a smile watching down”.
This song is about my dad who sadly passed away in 2022 and these lyrics are a tribute to him.
For those who may not have heard of Single By Sunday, can you describe it for us?
Jonny: I personally can’t, because I really don’t think we sound like anyone today. I think we have our own unique formula, our own sound and I think people who enjoy pop punk / pop music should give us a listen because chances are, you’ll find something in our back catalogue that you’ll like.
Josh: We are a high energy pop punk band from Glasgow, Scotland, and we treat every single one of our shows like we are playing to 50,000 people in a stadium.
How did the band get their name, Single By Sunday?
Jonny: We don’t tell anyone how we got the band name, it’s a band secret.
Josh: So, we have never told anyone how we came up with the name Single By Sunday. We like to keep people guessing.
Can you tell me a little bit about each member of the band and their role within the group?
Jonny: Josh is the lead singer, lazy for the most part but a great performer. I’m Jonny, I do most of the songwriting and production and I’m always referred to as the ‘Diva’ of the band, but I wouldn’t call me a diva, I just know what I want and what needs to be done.
Josh: I’m Josh the lead singer and I’m also the dad of the group. I like to kick back and relax after playing shows instead of living the party life.
Jonny – Is the guitarist for SBS and is the more outgoing personality of the band. Jonny is always up for a good time as long as you don’t piss him off by saying you hate ABBA or something.
Joshua – Joshua is the bassist and the comedian of SBS. If you ever need someone to make you laugh, then Joshua is your guy.
Ben – Is the drummer and the baby of the band. We bottle feed him every few hours and make sure to change his nappy when he shits himself.
What do you feel sets your band apart from other bands in your genre?
Jonny: We have our own branding, our own signature sound, we put on killer shows, we wear unique outfits that most pop punk bands aren’t wearing, whether it’s a glitter suit, PVC trousers, sequin jackets etc.
Josh: We have a very strong logo which is our bright colourful hair. This makes us stand out a lot as does our own unique sound of rock, fused with pop punk.
What are some of your favorite memories as a band?
Jonny: Playing vans warped tour, and feeling on top of the world, knowing what we had achieved.
Josh: Travels to America are my most favourite memories to date as a band. Getting to see so many different places and play so many amazing shows was a dream come true. My most memorable memory would have to be playing to a crowd of 50,000 people in Boston.
What is something that you have accomplished so far in your career that you are most proud of?
Jonny: Playing Vans Warped Tour. Easily one of the best experiences of my life.
Josh: We did an anti-bullying schools tour around the UK, Germany and America. Receiving hundreds of messages from kids that felt suicidal saying that our music had helped save them is 100% my biggest achievement.
If you could set up your tour with any band or singer, who would it be and why?
Jonny: If it’s a band that’s currently around now, it would be Turnstile, we love those guys. They put on such a great show that’s extremely high energy.
Josh: I would love to go out on tour with 5 Seconds of Summer. I feel that they would be a good laugh to hang out with and that their fans would love our music.
If you could write a song with any band or singer, who would it be?
Jonny: Harry Styles maybe, he’s got a great sound.
Josh: I am pretty boring and always listen to the radio, however Sonic Boom 6 are a great band to play in the car!
If we were to get in the car with you right now, what song would be listening to?
Jonny: Holy Roller by Spiritbox. The whole ‘Eternal Blue’ record is what I work out to, it’s just pure rage and energy. I love it.
Just for kicks and giggles: if you could be any kitchen utensil what would you be?
Jonny: Pizza cutter
Josh: I would be a fork; never been a big fan of spoons and I don’t really use knives. Forks all the way!
What can fans expect from you this upcoming year?
Jonny: Great shows, lots of music, lots and I mean lots of content on socials! This is really the year for content. Watch out for our brand new Pod cast, it’s called ‘Reel & Raw’. It’s not for the faint hearted but it is definitely for the open minded.
Josh: You can expect more music, music videos and plenty of shows coming your way in 2023. We are going to be back out in America in a couple of weeks’ time playing shows in LA and then we have a bunch of festivals lined up back here in the UK and last but not least a tour of Germany later in the year!
Is there anything else you would like your fans to know?
That we really do appreciate them, and I’d say ‘stay weird and just live your best life.
