Song Review: Angels and Airwaves -Rebel Girl

By April 30, 2019No Comments

FINALLY. THE WAIT IS OVER.

It’s been a long time since Tom DeLonge had released original music from Angels and Airwaves. Since 2014, AVA had only released two EP’s which only had four songs each. They haven’t had a stable music-based-production since 2014’s The Dream Walker.

After years of promises, of Instagram posts to countless tweets and the infamous “#BIGTHINGSCOMING” meme, Tom DeLonge has finally pulled through -and to be honest, it was worth the wait.

Angels and Airwaves released, “Rebel Girl” Tuesday morning, apart of their upcoming album which has yet-to-be named.

In past years, DeLonge has written darker songs with AVA with anthemic-movie emotions, which went along as soundtracks to various books, such as Strange Times. However, the band entered new territory with this new track. “Rebel Girl” is a perfect balance of what AVA’s future should be -a blast from the past and a fresh new identity.

The Past Meets The Future

Upon initial reaction, this song seemed to be a direct-feed from their previous album, The Dream Walker. But after listening a few more times (who am I kidding? It’s been on repeat since its release), this could almost necessarily be a blink-182 song.

The anthemic-spacey-love song is exactly what DeLonge bleeds through all of his music. There are power chords, synths, fantastic drum beats that move the song way further than the synth does, and most importantly; delay guitars.

It seems as if DeLonge listened to his fans and isn’t afraid to take their criticism to heart and work to make something that fits the criteria of what blink-182 and Angels and Airwaves fans would like. Not to mention, the chorus is as catchy as it gets.

Tom previously mentioned that this album would be grindy and sound like blink-182’s second album, Dude Ranch, but it seems like that idea has changed quite a bit. Yes, it’s only one song, but Tom’s Instagram post from June of 2018 hinted at a direction this track would go in, and he wasn’t far-off at all:

Either way, it’s exciting to see this refreshing era of Angels and Airwaves. Fans have waited a long, long time for this. It’s been worth the wait, but there’s definitely more to come and we’ll be getting a better-look at what atmosphere this album is going to tread towards in the following months, that’s for sure.

Guess you can say big things are coming;)
