On the surface, The Dangerous Summer’s “Fuck Them All” track could have been expressed as an acoustic jam with a subtle melodic tone. However, this is not at all the case. Right out of the gate, an anthemic opening lead guitar lick driven by Matt Kennedy grabs your heartstrings. The lead has the remanence of Story of the Year meets U2’s “Joshua Tree”. The drums fade in, accompanied by AJ on bass and we begin our journey.
The vocals feel effortlessly articulated. The track is titled “Fuck Them All”, but my take away comes from the statement: I understand this is my moment and nothings standing here in my way.
This theme is a powerful reflection on the mindset it takes to be a professional creative in 2020. Even in a stable climate, the concept of being a professional musician is like saying you want to be a professional athlete. Sure it’s possible to put a band together and play your local scene, but how do you break through to the mainstream and make the leap from a local venue to national stages? Luck is a moment when preparation meets opportunity. If you aren’t driven it’s kind of hard to stumble upon opportunity, but if you have a goal that you want more than air, chances are it will find you soon enough.
Since we live in a world where digital creditably can be quantified by likes shares and subscribers and I am new to this I will throw this out there… I met Matt Kennedy at an Ataris concert is 2003. I have followed his work since the early days of J.A.C.K., Best of Winter through the Graduate, The Thomas Ian Nicholas Band and so on. Those band names may mean nothing to you, but for me, they will always hold a special place and time.
