The E-Girl Review: Louis Tomlinson, Glass Animals, and more top alt artist moments from this week

By February 4, 2021No Comments

We’re back for more of the e-kid approved music updates. This week we have a variety of old and new, starting with viral sensations and moving to veteran-backed up-and-coming artists.

The best part is that the collective power of the Internet and the new platform that e-kid subculture now controls, has allowed for a new exploration of old techniques. We’re seeing artists who are transforming what it means to be alternative or pop-punk and creating a welcoming community facilitated by the fans.

CORPSE releases “agoraphobic” to all streaming platforms

After releasing this unique song on YouTube, CORPSE has finally made “agoraphobic” available elsewhere, too! Now fans can easily access his new single and get a whole new experience of what “CORPSE” music truly is.

This song is a slower-paced musical experience, with scene-setting sound effects. We find the same comforting and familiar voice of CORPSE, but this time it’s not full of flirtation, but rather a reflection of deep pain and depression. The artist explores his lyricism in this song and sets the scene for his possible next release. Since it’s short, the song feels more comparative to an unfinished demo, but also is a key release for the artist: showing that he’s multi-faceted and growing.

Following the success of his viral hit “E-GIRLS ARE RUINING MY LIFE!”, CORPSE is now experiencing a larger, dedicated fanbase full of e-kids and YouTube fans alike.

Louis Tomlinson celebrates one year anniversary of debut album Walls

On January 31st, the One Direction member took to Twitter to celebrate the one year release of his debut album Walls with his fans. Louis Tomlinson‘s first solo album was released in 2020 and came with a frenzy of support from his dedicated and loyal fanbase. Throughout the year, fans independently supported the album by periodically making a push to increase streaming and social exposure.

Walls had mild punk influences undercutting the clear pop-style music. It was an elevated album that showcases Louis Tomlinson’s beautiful vocals as well as his powerful lyricism. Even since the days of One Direction, it was always clear that Louis was a talented songwriter, having co-penned 37 of the band’s original songs. Now, fans are reminiscing on their year with the album and Louis spent the day on Twitter, responding to them to show his dedication and humility.

2020 was expected to be a year in the limelight for Louis, but due to COVID-19 regulations, his tour supporting his album was cut short. That didn’t stop him from having a historic year as he had announced that he had cut ties with his former label (Syco Music) and has since launched multiple efforts to give back to fans through exclusive merch, an online concert, and more.

While not a song off of Walls, All Punked Up has previously identified Louis’s single “Miss You” as a modern pop-punk masterpiece. Check out the review here.

Mesmerizing Glass Animals song “Heat Waves” reigns victorious in triple J‘s 2020 Hottest 100 and the reason may surprise you

While Glass Animals is no new-to-the-scene band, they have a long way to go before becoming a common household name. That being said, their success with the album Dreamland and further success with their top track “Heat Waves” proves that their well on their way to becoming the world’s new favorite band. “Heat Waves” proves to be a song to listen to by the way it had climbed the charts and stole triple J‘s iconic Hottest 100 number one place!

Even more iconic, part of this success can be attributed to a growing online fandom of Minecraft content creator fans. The song was the inspiration for a popular fanfiction entitled with the same namesake– Heat Waves. To read this story, head over to AO3 and see just how well it mirrors the song.

Fanfiction or not, it’s clear that this song’s amazing R&B influence and dream-like lyricism is relatable as well as explorative. You’ll just need to give it a listen.

POORSTACY teams up with Travis Barker for “Hills Have Eyes” music video

A win for both veteran pop-punk fans and new e-kids alike: POORSTACY‘s music video showcases modern rock energy alongside the guidance of Blink-182‘s Travis Barker.

Depicting the crude reality of modern Hollywood, POORSTACY showcases the problematic nature of the Los Angeles party scene and industries. The song is reminiscent of alt metal-core and clearly takes influence from early 2000’s pop-rock anthems.

Moreover, this song has the sort of energy that once this pandemic is over, I can clearly imagine a pit of fans going crazy for. It has an electrifying beat that makes you want to dance, despite the dark imagery portrayed by the lyrics and the video. Turning a depressing reality into a palatable and comforting song seems to be a strength of POORSTACY, who promises “there’s a lot more coming in the future”.

X Lovers teases new song on social media

The duo took fans by surprise on Tuesday when they posted an audio clip on social media with just a few seconds of a possible new song. “when should we release new music?” they asked fans. Of course, the comments were flooded with fans begging for a new tune.

If you don’t know much about X Lovers, know that they started rising in popularity prior to COVID, even touring with Chelsea Cutler. However, we haven’t necessarily seen a whole of them since, meaning it’s definitely time for a new track or two. If you love wholly emotional beats filled with sensuality and passion, you’ll love their sound.

In an era so dependent on social media to really blow up artists, this tactic is being seen more and more frequently by new-age artists, especially the use of Instagram reels.
