A scene staple returns: The Summer Set fulfills our emo hearts in new record ‘Blossom’ — album review

By September 8, 2022No Comments

The Summer Set is back with their latest record Blossom. The album drops on September 9th, 2022. In the meantime, check out one of the singles from the record below!

After announcing their indefinite hiatus in 2017, fans feared The Summer Set would never return. Recently, the band reunited for several sold out shows and performed on the Sad Summer Fest tour. Now, after 6 years, The Summer Set has released their 5th studio album Blossom. The entire record was produced by The Summer Set’s own John and Stephen Gomez.

You can order the record on vinyl now by clicking here.

“By definition, Blossom means ‘to mature or develop in a promising or healthy way.’ So, that’s what we did,” says vocalist Brian Logan Dales. “We had to go our separate ways as a band for a few years so we could all bloom into the people we’ve become today. This is an album about growth and togetherness. About letting go of the past and looking forward to the future.”

To celebrate the release of Blossom as well as the milestone of being a band for 15 years, The Summer Set have announced a headlining show on November 3 at The Regent Theatre in Los Angeles. You can grab tickets here.

We all know the iconic vibes we would feel when The Summer Set would hit the stage on Warped Tour. Get ready to feel those vibes all over again with their latest record Blossom. The 8-track LP takes our emo hearts home to the earlier 2000s. The record brings us a feeling of satisfaction about where we once were compared to where we are now.

The intro track “The Color of Everything” is one minute with a delicate piano build up and a motivational lyric “I want to see the color of everything.”

Track 2 is titled “Street Lightning” and it gives me early 2000s pop punk meets 2010s pop feels. The song grooves from the sing-a-long verses to a powerful chorus that will for sure get a crowd jumping and dancing.

Track 3 is one of my favorites on the record. “My Own Medicine” really shows how The Summer Set has evolved in their style over the last few years. Musically, the song gives more modern pop-rock vibes while still bringing in the emo feels. Lyrically, it is a modern twist on the scene favorite “My Own Worst Enemy” by Lit: “I don’t listen to the words I say / I love to make the same mistakes / Just to end up where I began / I hate the taste of my own medicine.” Not only is this so relatable, but the song itself is such a banger! You’ll catch me moshing and screaming the lyrics when I hear it live.

“Teenagers” features Against The Current and maintains that more modern pop-punk feel that we enjoy in track 3. The bridge builds up to the final chorus so seamlessly. It is so satisfying to hear two of my favorite artists collaborate to create this masterpiece.

“FTS” featuring Travie McCoy is another favorite of mine. I am a sucker for swear-word-filled, good vibes songs like this one. “Fuck that shit” and “shut up let me live” literally describe my mood at least 23 hours a day, haha. Plus, the solo at the end is quite beautiful.

Track 6 “Hard Candy” is another fan favorite. If you’re a long-term fan of The Summer Set, this track might be your favorite on the record. It has the perfect balance of iconic, 2010s pop-punk and modern pop-punk. The chorus is one of those “Let’s chant and dance at Warped Tour” moments.

“Famous” takes me back to those early 2000s-2010s pop-punk vibes and I am living for it! It is an iconic “everyone is doing better than me while I go get drunk” kind of song. Relatable and enjoyable.

The record ends perfectly with the track “Back Together”, which details the emotional journey they’ve traveled as individuals that led to their reunion. No spoilers here– just know you might want tissues ready. I can’t wait to be in a crowd with our phone lights up swaying side to side to this meaningful masterpiece.

As someone who has always been a fan of The Summer Set’s hit tracks, this record really made me realize just how much I love their music.
