First of all, congratulations on your new release today, “London” is a great track – how are you guys feeling?

Thank you very much. I think it’s a mixture of excitement and relief to be honest. We’re incredibly happy to be releasing new material, but we’ve been sat on these songs for so long that there was definitely a bit of frustration setting in on our part.  When you write songs you’re unbelievably proud of, all you want is for the world to hear them as soon as possible, but that’s just not the way the industry works; you have to play the game a bit.

Apart from the obvious, what is “London” about and what’s your favourite lyric from it?

The basic story of “London” reflects on a time where I got stranded in the city overnight, but the meaning behind it confronts that feeling of being overwhelmed by your surroundings, and a lot of the time that can just be life in general. We’ve all been there and it can be tough, but sometimes by embracing your situation it can get easier. My favourite lyric would have to be, “a burned out fear of the unknown.” It’s become apparent to me over time that certain fears don’t just go away, but you can get used to them after a while.

“London” is the first single off your upcoming album, The Modern State – do you have a release date yet?

There is a release date, but unfortunately we can’t announce it just yet. It won’t be long though, and we genuinely can’t wait. It’s been a long time coming.

For newcomers, can you describe The Young Hearts in 3 words?

Honest, heartfelt anthems

What’s the story behind the band name, how did it come about?

We floated a few ideas around the group before we decided on The Young Hearts, but it was the only name that seemed to fit. We’d all been playing music for a long time so we’re certainly not the youngest band, but there’s a definite youth about our passion and drive to still create and express ourselves musically.

What bands/artists have you been listening to in lockdown?

We’ve had some great weather recently, so there’s been a lot of punk rock like The Bouncing Souls, and Lifetime, perfect summer listening. As for new stuff, Phoebe Bridgers new album is just beautiful, and New Found Glory’s latest record is a whole lot of fun.

Do you have anything else to say to our APU readers?

The current situation has left a lot of smaller, independent artists in difficult circumstances, so I’d just say that, if you can help them out by picking up some merch, buying or streaming their records, or even just sharing their songs, it could be a massive help to them. If The Young Hearts is one, then great, but there are so many fantastic bands out there that could use the support right  now.

“London” is out now and you can listen to it here.
