We had the opportunity to catch up with the band from Brisbane, Australia, Waxflower, in an exclusive All Punked Up Interview.
“Sixteen Floors” was written at a time of trial for you, would you say that this song helped you cope with your negative thoughts?
Definitely, I think the song helped me to express some of the thoughts and emotions that I probably wouldn’t have externalised otherwise. The writing experience was really cathartic, it’s a really powerful feeling to wrangle those darker thoughts into a creative output.
What is one thing you feel like your fans should know about “Sixteen Floors”?
The song was actually written and recorded in late 2018, so we’ve been sitting on it for a while now. It’s the last song of the batch we recorded then, so everything coming out next is fresh.
For someone who is struggling with mental health issues, what is your biggest piece of advice for them?
Everyone’s struggles are complex and varied so I’m cautious to provide blanket advice. My journey has been long and is still going, but the thing that has helped me the most was reaching out for professional help. Talk therapy and a great psychiatrist helped pull me through the hardest times of my life and I’m thankful that I’m not going through everything on my own.
When you are in a writers block, what helps you get out of it?
Usually taking some time away from whatever I’m working on will let me re approach with less frustration.
If you could collaborate with someone for a song, who would you choose?
I would love to do some writing with Ben Folds. He is one of my favourite songwriters and his work covers so many bases genre-wise, so I’m sure whatever that session would yield would be ridiculous.
What are some of the bands future goals or things you would like to accomplish in the next year?
We’ve got lots of new music which we are itching to release, hopefully touring is viable in the next year also!
As a band, what are some of your favorite memories?
For me it’s whenever I see people singing the words back at shows. It’s something I’ve never experienced before and it makes everything worth it.
If you could describe yourself as a fruit or vegetable, what would you be?
Probably a cucumber. I’m long and bland.
Is there anything else you would like to share with your Fans and All Punked Up?
Just that we’re excited to keep releasing music and hopefully playing shows!
