Women’s History Month: women in the scene who are leaving a major legacy

By March 31, 2021No Comments

With Women’s History month coming to an end, we would be amiss if we didn’t recognize the women making history right this very moment. Many of the women on this list have already made a huge impact on what it means to be pop-punk, but we’re sure they will continue to surprise us.

Juliet Simms

This absolute icon has quickly become a role model for so many women looking for their place in the scene. Starting as the frontwoman in Automatic Loveletter, Juliet later expanded to her solo work, showcasing her talent as a singer-songwriter, poet, and more. A queen of Warped Tour, we’re so thankful to have her in music. However, Juliet Simms is dead… this is the rise of Lilith Czar!

Hayley Williams

If you don’t jam out to Paramore, then you’re missing out on true bliss. Hayley is who brought a lot of young women into this scene and is still extraordinarily prevalent. Interestingly enough, Hayley started her career off in pop before finding her places in pop rock where now Paramore reigns as one of the top bands. She’s also known for other business ventures, making her the type of woman who can do it all.

Doll Skin

Current Members: Sydney Dolezal, Meghan Herring

Past Members: Alex Snowden, Nicole Rich

Although having recently split, Doll Skin is still the sort of band that is bound to leave an impact in music history. Compromised entirely of powerful women, they have toured with bands like New Found Glory and cultivated a truly passionate fan base. What really set this band apart from the others was their intrinsic focus on social justice and sheer dedication to their craft. You can read more about this band by checking out our previous interview with them.

Jenna McDougall

If you haven’t cried to “Lonely Girl”, you’re lying.

Jenna McDougall was many of our high school years. As the frontwoman of Tonight Alive, she brings a much needed breath of life to this skin. In fact, if you’ve ever been to a Tonight Alive show, you know just how she uplifts her fans and does everything in her power to make an impact on their lives. Her ability to captivate a crowd is mesmerizing. This Australian singer adds a sense of edge to all of her music, while not taking away the sensitivity of its sound.

Bonnie Fraser

Stand Atlantic is a band still growing and striving to reach their full potential. While the band as a whole is clear mixture of talent, Bonnie Fraser is a woman of absolute power and drive. Just by taking a look at any of Bonnie’s social media, you can tell she’s down to earth and real. These feelings shine though in her music and we can’t wait to see the legacy she will continue to create.

Avril Lavigne

How could we not mention the OG pop punk queen herself? While some may argue that Arvil Lavigne is now just history, it feels way too early to let her go that easily. Arvil Lavigne breathed life into what was otherwise a dying scene. She made it cool to be skater emo again and for that we can forever be grateful.

Ash Costello

New Years Day has been through so many changes over the years, but Ash Costello has been one of the wonderful constants. She’s known for pushing the limits, trailblazing in this scene for so many other artists. Ash constantly leans into femininity as a strength and brings it into the music with her, proving the power behind women everywhere. New Years Day wouldn’t be the same without her and neither would this scene.

Jetty Bones aka Kelc Galluzzo

You can argue Jetty Bones is pop… semantics. It would be terrible to not mention Kelc in this list. Her alternative music has led her to perform shows with bands like The Wonder Years. To truly know her music is to watch her perform live and fully embrace her audience and music. Jetty Bones is an artist on the rise who will leave a beautiful and indie legacy.

There are so many more women we’d want to shout out. We’ve seen incredible change in this industry and scene over the years, thanks to the historic trailblazers that you can read more about here. However, there is still a long way to go.

While Women’s History Month has come to a close, women’s issues are still an ongoing fight and we will stand with and uplift those voices in this scene.
