Delicate: new EP from Lastelle – review

By February 26, 2021No Comments

Atmospheric post-hardcore quintet, Lastelle dropped their latest EP, Delicate today via Year Of The Rat Records and Beth Shalom Records.

Lastelle have thrown themselves in the deep end with Delicate but in a good way.  The band has opened itself up to plenty of self-reflection and in turn, have created a collection of songs that will resonate with any listener.  The quintet explore their own relationships with love and grief – in a previous interview, the band talks about how “Coping Without A Cure” is written from the perspective of someone suffering with Alzheimer’s.  A point of view that can often be overlooked, Lastelle have incorporated the feelings surrounding the side effects of the disease – “When I’m gone I pray you won’t remember me this way.”

More often than not, we talk about how lyrics make us feel something but the textured soundscapes and soaring vocals in Delicate also play a part in this.  There’s a rise and fall throughout the EP that takes you on a journey.  The band is telling a story and with that in mind, we recommend you play Delicate through headphones to really get lost in the emotive lyrics and atmosphere.

Speaking about Delicate, Freddie Whatmore says, “These songs are our own reflections of our personal struggles with love and loss. As someone who struggles to find a way to express these deep emotions, I use this band as a way of releasing this in a healthy and creative way. A few years ago, I lost my uncle to cancer. He was one of biggest inspirations and my gateway to music, as a guitarist himself. These feelings won’t ever go away, but having this band to be a cathartic output has helped massively. That is what the song “Departure” is about; accepting death and knowing to appreciate what you had, not what is lost.

Throughout the EP we explore the intricacies of what it means to lose someone, and the emotional journey that comes with it. The visual representation of the flowers being taken out of its natural habitat and taped to the walls signifies the fragility and delicate nature of life. As they wilt and die, from new life to death, from purity to passion, flowers ultimately represent the swift passage from life into death.”

Lastelle deliver the blend of emotional lyrics with post-hardcore hooks so well and we can guarantee you’ll be clicking play again, as soon as you finish one listen of Delicate.  This band are one to watch and we can’t wait to see what they do next – maybe an album on the horizon?
